What are the criteria to qualify for compensation for a patient injury?

Are you helping someone apply for compensation?

Usually, the person who has suffered a patient injury applies for compensation. In some cases, the applicant may want someone else to apply on their behalf, such as a relative, a close friend, or a lawyer.

Use of a solicitor

You will receive the necessary assistance from NPE when applying for compensation and you will normally not need any help from a solicitor. Nevertheless, legal costs will be covered in some cases. Do I report my case to NPE or the county governor?

The county governor has authority to take action with regard to health personnel. NPE does not have this authority. We process applications for compensation and pay out compensation to those who are entitled to it.

Treatment abroad

Norwegian citizens who incur an injury when receiving treatment abroad cannot apply for compensation from NPE. Claims for compensation following injury should generally be directed to the treatment site.
